Home Economics Syllabus

Course Description:    Learn to sew and cook.  In this semester length class you will learn the basics in cooking foods in all the food groups. We learn how to operate a sewing machine and sew a project.                                    

Course Outline:

                         Sewing machine operation and sewing terms. (2 weeks)

 Construct shorts and cloth bag (4weeks)

                            Kitchen safety and food safety. (1 week)

 Cooking in the grain group.  Baking, pasta, rice, etc. (4 weeks)

 Nutrition (2 weeks)

 Cooking in the dairy group. (1 week)

 Cooking in the fruit and vegetable groups.  (1 week)

                            Cooking in the meat group.  (2 weeks)

 Foreign Foods Project.  (1 weeks)

Grading Scale:

                            90-100 A

80-90        B

70-80        C

60-70        D

59-0            F

Grade Weighting:

1st  Quarter    Test 20%

                       Notebook 20%

                       Cooking Lab 20%

                       Sewing Project 40%

2nd Quarter     Test 25%

                       Notebook 25%

                       Cooking Lab 50%

                      

Student Expectations:   RESPECT 

Teacher—Listen and follow directions

Students—Treat others how you would like to be treated. Do not get into other’s belongings.                   

 Equipment—Take care of equipment like you would your personal belongings.                                                                              

 Come to learn.  Be respectful and courteous to others. 

No one has the right to interfere with another student’s education.

             Procedures:   Be in seat ready to work when bell rings.

                                  No hats, backpacks or coats in class.

                                  Teacher dismisses class.                     

                                  No food or drink allowed in class.                                 

                                 Gum is OK.

                                 May bring water bottle.

                                 Bring reading and agenda book everyday.                                      

                                 One pass out of class per quarter.                                                                                                   

                                       Three refocuses—lunch detention

   Three tardies—lunch detention

Make-up Policy:   Two days to make-up work for everyday absent.

Teacher Availability:   Any day after school for extra help.  Make an appointment.
