Resources
Most material presented will be by lecture, video and handout. The textbook used for class is Graphic Communications Today, forth edition. However, much of the material will be presented by instructor.
Course Objectives
1) To gain and understanding and appreciation for the elements and principles of design.
2) To be able to recognize the principles and elements in everyday materials, whether that be in print media or on television, graphic design is all around us.
3) To learn to incorporate the principles and elements of design into you other classwork. Whether that be how you design and layout a poster for another class or how you assemble and present information.
4) To gain an understanding of the enormity of graphic design and how it is used in absolutely everything, from the print design of textiles to the construction of furniture.
You will be responsible for completing all the graded lessons. Each lesson will contain a lecture/presentation element by the instructor, followed by a project demonstrating your understanding of each lesson.
Grades
You will receive 5 points for being on time and 20 points for using your time productively during class.
Any quiz we have will be worth 100 points.
Projects will be worth 200 points each. 100 points for you idea and 100 points for your execution.
Your letter grade will be determined as a percentage of the total number of points there is possible to earn: 90% or more A 80% or 89% B 70% to 79% C 60% to 69% D
Most quizzes will be in the form of crossword puzzles, therefore, spelling counts. They will be based directly on what we covered in class.
About the instructor
This is my eighth year of teaching. Before teaching I worked in various art departments of businesses, as well as serving as art director for six years for a publishing company. I have worked on both national and internationally circulated magazines and well as having my illustrations published extensively in The Flyfisher magazine. I have owned and operated my own graphics business since 1990. I attended the University of Idaho, Ricks College and graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1990. I am very comfortable with almost any medium and we will work with a variety. We are fortunate that I have a substantial budget provided to me by the State of Idaho due to my vocational certification. This allow us to work with many different types of mediums, it will be provided to you without charge as long as you are respectful and do not purposely waste or vandalize the materials.
