NHS Toys for Tots Drive
2009 Chair - Hope Woodruff

December 2nd thru the 12th (Period 1A)

Goal $100 per class = $5000

The Sandpoint Lions Club needs to raise about $78,000 each year for Toys for Tots.

·        Families fill out an application form (available at Health and Welfare and Panhandle Health)

·        Just before Christmas families go to the Lions Club (located by the train car in Lakeview Park).

·        The families get to pick out $45 in NEW toys for each child.  The inside of the building is set up like a store.  The parents choose toys for their own kids and are not just given generic toys.

·        The families are given a gift certificate for $45 for each 12-16 year old in their household. This is good for clothing at stores in downtown Sandpoint.

·        The family gets a box of food.  This is fresh food from Yokes with a real spiral ham, gallons of milk, everything you need to make a nice Christmas dinner and a few other meals – enough for about 3 days.

·        The Sandpoint Lions Club will give out 550 boxes of food this year.  They anticipated running out as their will most likely be more people in need than 550 this year.

·        The fire department ran this program in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.  The Lions Club took over in 1953.

·        The Sandpoint Lions Club buys toys all year long when local stores run discount sales.

·        The Toys for Toys program is owned by the school district.  Only families who live in the jurisdiction of  LPOSD #84 may apply.

·        The police officers deliver toys and food to the families who are not able to come pick them up.

·        The Sandpoint Lions Club also: runs the Easter Egg Hunt (funded by an endowment), runs the 4th of July parade and celebration, collects used eyeglasses to be distributed for free to people in need, provides college scholarships for local students, and puts out flags all over town for all the national holidays.
